ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- In the penultimate game of the 2018 regular season, the Elmira College men's soccer team was defeated 4-0 in a road Empire 8 Conference matchup at Growney Stadium in Rochester, New York.
With the loss, the Soaring Eagles have been eliminated from eliminated from Empire 8 Tournament contention, dropping to 1-5 in conference play with one game remaining.
The Cardinals, who improved to 4-2 against E8 opponents, outshot the Soaring Eagles by a 20-to-8 margin. Elmira goalkeeper
Giovanni Garufi '22 was put to work from the get-go, as St. John Fisher fired four shots in the first 10-and-a-half minutes. He made one of his five saves, before Fisher broke through with its first goal in the 32nd minute. The Cardinals doubled their lead shortly after in the 36th minute and took a 2-0 lead into the break.
EC looked to cut into Fisher's lead in the second half.
John Broyles '19 released a shot in the 63rd minute that was saved by Cardinal keeper Justin Miles, and in the 73rd minute,
Gavin Wise '22 had an attempt blocked by a defenseman before it reached the net. Perhaps the best chances for the Soaring Eagles came late, one being a
Ryan Wallace '22 header on a corner in the 82nd minute. Wallace had another shot attempt ring off of the post in the 89th minute, preserving the shutout for St. John Fisher.
