ELMIRA, N.Y. -- On an especially rainy evening, the Elmira College women's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to visiting Fredonia under the lights at Notre Dame High School's turf field.

The Blue Devils owned a 15-5 lead in shots, as well as a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal. Corner-kick chances were also in favor of Fredonia, 6-0.

A well-constructed set piece produced tonight's game-opening and eventual game-winning goal, as Lauren Cullinan scored inside the 18-yard box for Fredonia in the 15th minute. Abby Price set up the goal with a lead pass inside the box to Cullinan, who routinely placed the ball into the lower left corner for the score.

Emily Kwiatkowski made it a 2-0 Fredonia lead at the 23-minute mark. Claire Roosa assisted on the goal with a well-placed through-ball that set Kwiatkowski up for the score, which held up through the end of the first half.

In the second stanza, Fredonia doubled its shot attempts to 10, but the Purple and Gold did a solid job of limiting quality scoring chances. Aiding Elmira's defensive efforts was first-year netminder Cassidy Buchman '22, who racked up five of her six saves in the second half.

Despite the efforts of Buchman and the EC back line, Fredonia was able to produce its third and final goal of the evening in the 76th minute. A long over-the-top pass from Cullinan found Karen Johnson inside the 18-yard box one-on-one with Buchman. Buchman, who denied Johnson just a few minutes prior, was unable to defend the shot as Johnson chipped the ball over the EC netminder for the goal.

Although EC trailed, the Soaring Eagles were still able to generate a handful of quality scoring chances. Elmira's best opportunity took place late in the second half, when Taylor Hanson '21 beat a pair of Blue Devil defenders, before sending a cross into the box. Hanson's feed slipped through several defenders to the far post where Hailey Boris '21 nearly poked it in for the score. However, Boris was one step behind the feed, as the ball rolled to the far sideline.

News and Notes
  • Buchman made her first collegiate start for the Soaring Eagles.
  • Buchman logged her fourth appearance of the year and amassed a season-high six saves.
  • There was a 30-minute delay late in the first half due to lightening in the area.
