Sage Trips Up Women's Soccer in E8 Play

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Despite a goal from Taylor Hanson '21, the Elmira College women's soccer team couldn't keep pace with Empire 8 Conference foe Sage on Saturday evening, falling on the road by a final score of 5-1.

Elmira's defense weathered the wet conditions and a 30-shot barrage from the Gators, as senior goalkeeper Meghan Ray '19 stood tall between the sticks with a career-high 13 saves.  EC registered five shots on Saturday evening, with three of them finding their way on target. Cassidy Buchman '22 made a relief appearance in net, making two saves.

After trading shot attempts through the opening 10 minutes with Sage, the Gators earned a free-kick from just outside the Soaring Eagles' 18-yard box.  Samantha Trimblett fired a shot past the outstretched arms of Ray to put EC down 1-0. The Purple and Gold held Sage at-bay until the 28th minute, as the Gators were able to strike again to take a two-goal lead into the halftime break.

A three-goal barrage in the second was the difference, as Sage found the back of the net in the 62nd, 63rd, and 75th minutes. Hanson pulled one back for the Soaring Eagles in the 85th minute to get the Purple and Gold on the board. The sophomore streaked passed her defender before rounding the goalkeeper to bury an easy finish to give the game its final scoreline of 5-1.

  • Hanson is currently tied for fourth in the Empire 8 with six goals.
  • Ray's 13 saves were a career-high and marked the second time this season she has tallied double-digit saves.
