HOBOKEN, N.J. -- The Empire 8 Conference-leading Ducks of Stevens Institute of Technology remained unbeaten in league play after beating the Elmira College men's soccer team by a 4-0 final score at the DeBaun Athletic Complex in Hoboken, New Jersey, on Saturday evening.

EC put up a tough fight in the early minutes of the contest and was able to hold the E8's highest-scoring offense off of the scoreboard for the first 12-plus minutes of action. Freshman keeper Giovanni Garufi '22, making his 11th start of the season, logged one of his two first-half saves in the seventh minute to deny the Ducks. Garufi would make another stop in the 15th minute, but not before Stevens – which is receiving votes in the latest edition of the national polls after making an appearance in the top 25 earlier this season – netted its initial goal to snag an early 1-0 advantage in the 13th minute.

The Ducks quickly widened the gap to 3-0 with back-to-back scores in a span of 42 seconds in the 23rd and 24 minutes. Elmira's defenders, including senior captain Colin Morrison '19 and rookie Nicholas Zanger '22, who each played all 90 minutes against the Ducks, aided their goalkeeper by blocking five shots in the opening period and six total in the game.

Making his collegiate debut, Andrew Angelone '22 took over between the sticks to start the second half. Angelone, a 6-foot-5-inch goalie from Vero Beach, Florida, immediately flashed his talents by logging a pair of saves in the 53rd and 56th minutes.

News and Notes
  • Stevens finished the contest with advantages in shots, 21-to-0, and corner kicks, 7-to-1.
  • Garufi increased his team-leading save total to 40 after making a pair of stops in the first half.
  • Angelone made his first appearance of the year in the second half, allowing one goal with two stops.
  • Haden Smith '22 and Kairu Taira '22 both started in the midfield and have been a part of the starting lineup in all 12 games so far in 2018.
