MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- In a rematch of the 2018 NCAA Tournament Semifinals, the top-ranked Elmira College women's ice hockey team fell by a 4-1 final score to No. 2/2-ranked Plattsburgh State in the consolation game of the Panther/Cardinal Classic on Sunday afternoon.
Â
Plattsburgh held a 36-17 lead in shots on goal and went 2-for-7 on the power play, while the Soaring Eagles came up empty on four power-play opportunities.
Â
Erin McArdle put the Cardinals on top, 1-0, with a 5-on-3 power-play goal at the 8:39 mark of the first period. Courtney Moriarty then made it a 2-0 Plattsburgh lead with an even-strength goal with just 45 seconds remaining in the first period. Both goals were scored off of rebounds.
Â
After being outshot, 16-6, in the first period, Elmira looked to turn things around in the second stanza but Plattsburgh's aggressiveness allowed the Cardinals to outshoot EC 11-5. As a result, Plattsburgh's Abby Brush was able to find the back of the net at 8:33 to give the Cardinals a 3-0 advantage.
Â
The scoring from Plattsburgh continued early in the third period, as McArdle scored her second power-play goal of the game at 1:38.
Â
Elmira had a pair of power-play chances in the third period, but was unable to find the back of the net on either chance. However, EC did find a goal from its rookie blueliner
Jenny Heath '22, who netted her first career goal at 18:27. After receiving passes from
Meg Lahey '19 and
