AMHERST, Mass. -- Resilience was the key phrase for the No. 3/3-ranked Elmira College women's ice hockey team, as the Soaring Eagles erased a one-goal first-period deficit and collected a crucial 2-1 road victory over Amherst College on Friday night.
The Soaring Eagles outshot the Mammoths, 11-3, in the first period, but despite the lopsided shot count, Amherst skated off the ice with a 1-0 lead. Mia DelRosso put the Mammoths on top in the opening period with a power-play goal at 17:46.
Amherst's lead last only 1:43 of the second stanza, thanks to the efforts of fourth-year forward
Shannon Strawinski '19. After receiving a pass from
Maddie Evangelous '19, who picked off a D-to-D pass from behind the Amherst cage, Strawinski one-timed the puck into the back of the net for her second tally of the season, which leveled the contest at 1-1.
Elmira pressed for a go-ahead goal in the second period behind an 18-7 advantage in shots on goal, but the Amherst's Caitlin Walker came up with 17 saves to keep the contest knotted at 1-1 entering the final intermission.
In the third frame, Elmira was awarded four power-play opportunities, including three in the opening 5:15 of the period. Although EC possessed the extra skater, Amherst's penalty-kill unit stepped up in a big way and denied the Soaring Eagles on all four chances.
Elmira's penalty-kill unit was also put to the test with a late holding penalty at 14:36, but just as Amherst had done, EC held the Mammoths scoreless.
With the game deadlocked at 1-1, Elmira turned to its senior captain, Evangelous, who deposited the game-winning goal with 1:12 remaining in regulation. The tally was Evangelous' third of the season and was assisted by
Kiana Melvin '20, who rifled a shot towards the net, which was redirected by Evangelous for the goal.
Rookie netminder
Stephanie Martin '22 finished with 16 saves in a winning effort. Martin turned away seven shots in both the second and third periods to secure her fourth win of the year.

Tim Crowley reflects on tonight's win…
"We kept our energy up and remained system-strong. We had a lot of chances to finish and we eventually found a way. Maddie was great tonight. She's one of our leaders and played that way. Her line created a lot of chances and she was able to chip in on both goals."
