UTICA, N.Y. --
Despite a season-high goal output and a one-goal halftime lead, the Elmira College men's lacrosse team came up short on the road in Empire 8 Conference action to Utica College, 16-7. Five EC players logged at least one goal, including senior attackman Nevin Olney '18, who paced the Purple and Gold with a season-high three tallies.

Utica held a 49-36 lead in shots and a 26-20 advantage in shots on goal. Elmira went 13-for-18 (72.2%) on clear attempts, while Utica converted on 21-of-24 (87.5%) chances. Ground balls also finished in favor of the Pioneers, who collected 35 compared to EC's 28. Faceoff numbers ended in a similar fashion, as Elmira won 11-of-27 opportunities. Additionally, Elmira connected on 2-of-7 (28.6%) extra-man opportunities and Utica cashed in on 3-of-7 (42.9%).

The Pioneers opened today's scoring with a goal from Matt Fedullo in the first 49 seconds of regulation, however, Elmira ended the first quarter by scoring four of the final five goals to take a 4-2 lead into the second stanza. Fueling the Elmira offense was Olney, who scored EC's first three goals, all of which were unassisted. Seth Amstein '19 concluded the first-quarter scoring with a man-up tally, his second goal of the season.

Elmira's run continued in the second quarter with another man-up goal, this one coming from senior midfielder Jacob Magnoli '18, who produced his third tally of the season at the 11:07 mark to give the Purple and Gold a 5-2 advantage. Olney was credited with an assist on the Magnoli tally. From there, Utica scored three unanswered goals to level the contest at 5-5 with 5:07 left in the first half.

In the closing five minutes of the first half, Elmira outscored Utica by a 2-to-1 margin, as the Soaring Eagles marched into the halftime break with a 7-6 lead. David Keisler '20 and Kevin DiMagno '20 were EC's two goal scorers during that time frame, as Keisler struck at the 4:53 mark for his first goal of the season on an assist from DiMagno, before DiMagno followed it up with a goal of his own with just three ticks left on the first-half clock.

Unfortunately for Elmira, today's game was a classic tale of two halves, as the Soaring Eagles were held scoreless in the second half and Utica racked up 10 unanswered goals. The offensive outburst and defensive prowess of the Pioneers paved the way for the 16-7 conference victory.
