ELMIRA, N.Y.
-- It was a valiant defensive effort by the Elmira College women's soccer team on Tuesday afternoon, but the Soaring Eagles couldn't keep their scoring magic going against Hartwick, as the Hawks earned a 1-0 victory over the Purple and Gold in their Empire 8 Conference opener.

Elmira's defense stood tall afternoon as the Hawks offense peppered the Soaring Eagles with 29 shots. Only 12 found their way on target however, as EC continually cut down Hartwick's shooting lanes. Elmira's duo of keepers, Meghan Ray '19 and Gabe Carmona '19 made five saves apiece to keep the Hawks off of the scoreboard following the opening goal.

Hartwick was able to find the back of the net early, as the Hawks struck in the 8th minute. Gabrielle Kreppein advanced down Elmira's left flank before serving a low cross into the Soaring Eagles' penalty area. Alexa DuBois collected the ball and sent a shot towards the left post, which at first looked like it was going wide, but eventually snuck into the corner to put Hartwick up 1-0.

Elmira had a good look in the 18th minute as Taylor Wilms '22 rose above the defense on a corner service from Zoya Katta '21. Unfortunately, the 5-foot-9 inch freshman's attempt found the waiting arms of Hartwick keeper Cassandra Robataille. A short three minutes later, Ray was called into action as Kreppein broke away from EC's backline, but Ray won the battle as she charged out from her net to make the save.

Hartwick kept up the pressure in the second half as the Hawks tried to test Carmona. The senior made her first save of the contest in the 69th minute, fending off a shot from Hartwick's Samantha Ford. The battle to turned to the midfield as the two sides fought for possession, but ultimately Hartwick's pressure hemmed in the Purple and Gold's high-flying attack as the Hawks took the match 1-0.
