ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College women's soccer team fell by an 8-0 final score in its home-opener this afternoon to visiting University of Mary Washington. EC's
Gabe Carmona '19 made nine saves between the sticks in her first start for the Soaring Eagles since the 2015 season.
Only 1:06 ticked off of the game clock before the Eagles of Mary Washington scored their first goal of the contest. Brooke Bauman tallied the game-opening score, the first of two goals on the day, on an assist from Abby Zimmerman. The score was the first goal EC allowed this season, after holding Alfred State scoreless through 110 minutes in the 2018 season opener two days ago.
Mary Washington built its lead to 3-0, before heading into the halftime break, as Brielle Mitchell and Lindsey Hendrickson scored unassisted goals in the 17th and 33rd minutes, respectively.
Zoya Katta '21, who made her first appearance at Campus Field since the 2017 season opener, logged EC's lone shot of the first half in the 31st minute.
Elmira looked to slow down the Mary Washington attack, but the Eagles picked up where they left off and rattled-off five unanswered goals in the second half. Bauman tallied her second goal of the game in the 53rd minute, which was followed by back-to-back goals from Malorie Joseph in the 56th and 59th minutes. The duo of Zoila Rodriguez and Hannah Nightingale connected for one goal and one assist apiece in the 82nd and 90th minutes to close out the game's scoring.
Taylor Hanson '21 and
Hailey Boris '21 registered shots for the Soaring Eagles in the second half, but neither attempt broke through for a score, as Elmira was handed its first loss of the season.
