DELHI, N.Y. --The Elmira College women's soccer team headed into double overtime for the second time this season on Wednesday afternoon, but couldn't hang on for the victory, dropping a 2-1 heartbreaker to the host Broncos.
Elmira came flying out of the gates, as senior captain
Allie LoPresti' 19 narrowly missed an opening goal in the seventh minute as her header narrowly flew over the top of the crossbar. The Soaring Eagles continued to press and were rewarded five minutes later, as
Taylor Hanson '21 beat Delhi's Rachel Scoones to give the Purple and Gold a 1-0 advantage.
The Purple and Gold traded shots with Delhi for the remainder of the first half as senior keeper
Gabe Carmona '19 was called into action five times following Hanson's strike.
Nicole Hanselman '20 tested Scoones in the 23rd minute, but her effort on net was turned away.
Zoya Katta '21 almost pushed Elmira ahead by 2-0 in the final two minutes of the opening period but a lunging save kept EC's lead at 1-0.
The Broncos pressured Elmira's defense to start the second half action, launching four shots in the opening ten minutes. The Purple and Gold held fast and were able to weather the initial barrage, but Delhi's Katie Herba was able to sneak a ball past Carmona in the 83rd minute to draw the score level at 1-1.
The Soaring Eagles had two opportunities in the final six minutes to seal the victory, but were unable to find the back of the net. Freshman
Adrianna Cornell '22 saw her attempt get turned away by Scoones in the 84th minute, forcing Delhi to make a change in net. Fellow first-year player
Megan Bacon '22 tested the Bronco's Jessica Shultis in the final minute but couldn't't beat the new goalkeeper as time expired.
Elmira was held without a shot in the first overtime period, but EC's defense frustrated Delhi's attack, only allowing one shot to reach Carmona. Cornell had a chance once again in the second overtime period, but couldn't get the ball past Shultis. Delhi broke the tie in the 108th minute, as Brianna Laing and Alexa Scaglione combined to steal a 2-1 victory over the Soaring Eagles.
