ALFRED, N.Y. -- Despite a pair of hard-fought battles at No. 3 doubles and No. 2 singles, the Elmira College women's tennis team was beaten, 7-2, by Alfred University in the 2018-19 Empire 8 Conference opener on Wednesday at Alfred's William T. Brown Tennis Courts.
The Soaring Eagles secured two points by earning one win apiece in doubles and singles play, with both matches requiring a tiebreaker set. The duo of
Katy Jewett '21 and
Marta Kliszcz '20 were victors at third doubles against AU's Rachel Pera and Miranda Sakala. With the score even at 7-all, the Soaring Eagles posted a 7-3 score in the tiebreaker to seal the match, 8-7.
Alfred solidified the match and improved to 1-0 in E8 play by earning wins in fourth of the five singles matchups. In the second spot in the lineup, sophomore
Cassie Brown '21 endured a grueling three-set match versus Alfred's Lauren Boshart. The EC sophomore took the opening set, 6-4, and rebounded from a 6-1 loss in the second set by cruising to a 10-3 triumph in the super tiebreaker.
Senior
Cheyanne Holwell '19 put up a tough fight at No. 3 singles for the Soaring Eagles but fell in straight sets by identical 6-2 scores. Following her doubles win, Kliszcz tested Alfred's Amber Smith at the fifth singles position by taking three games in the second set, but it wasn't enough, as Smith prevailed by a 6-0, 6-3 final.
