PINE VALLEY, N.Y. -- A third-period outburst by No. 5/5-ranked Oswego State lifted the visiting Lakers to a 4-1 non-conference victory over the Elmira College men's ice hockey team at the Murray Athletic Center on Saturday night.
The Soaring Eagles and Lakers played to a scoreless draw at the first intermission, before EC struck in the second period to take an early lead. Following a takeaway in front of the Oswego goal,
Chris Moses '19 netted his second goal of the season 2:26 into the second period, giving Elmira a lead that lasted for the next 25:27. An errant pass by Kristoffer Brun directly in front of the cage landed on the stick of Moses, who quickly flung the puck past goalie Cedric Hansen glove side before he could react.
In the first two periods, second-year goaltender
Jake Sabourin '21 and the EC defense did a fine job of smothering an Oswego State offense that averages nearly four goals per game and boasts one of the State University of New York Athletic Conference's (SUNYAC) top power-play units. While the Purple and Gold did not surrender a power-play goal on two tries, the Lakers opened the floodgates by scoring four times in the third.
The Lakers tied the game at the 7:53 mark of the final period on a breakaway goal off the stick of Josh LeBlanc. The tides then turned entirely in the Lakers' favor following back-to-back tallies by Travis Broughman and Max Novick that came a mere 1:03 apart. With under three minutes remaining in regulation, Oswego was able to bury a second-chance opportunity to ice the contest. Following a blocker save by Sabourin, Jody Sullivan was able to muscle to puck past EC's sprawling netminder as he fell to the ice with a defender draping his back.
Stunned by the sudden success of the Laker offense, the Soaring Eagles managed to direct only two shots on goal in the third period and were outshot in the contest, 27-to-21.
