ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College women's soccer team was unable to keep pace with the high-flying attack of Alfred University on Saturday afternoon, falling by a final score of 5-1 on Campus Field.
The Saxons (7-5-3, 2-2-1 E8) employed a high press from the opening whistle that resulted in 33 shots for the away side. Elmira (2-11-0, 0-5-0 E8) stood tall defensively, allowing only 16 of those shots to find their way on target while forcing Alfred into offsides positions on seven occasions.
Ally Knorr-Anderson '23 played the full 90 minutes in goal and made 10 saves to slow Alfred's barrage.
Alfred's early pressure paid off, as the Saxons opened the scoring in the third minute. EC slipped behind 2-0 following a Saxons' penalty kick but broke through with a scoring chance in the 32nd minute.
Nicole Hanselman '20 gathered the ball inside Alfred's 18-yard box and got a shot off through traffic, but the Saxons' Hannah Fuller kept Hanselman's effort out of the net.
As time wound down in the opening half of play, Elmira was faced with a barrage of corners from Alfred. Knorr-Anderson and the Soaring Eagles' backline fended off the attack with a pair of saves and a goal-line clearance from
Lauren Foster '23 to keep the Saxons off of the scoreboard.
The Saxons opened the second half by cashing in on a corner kick opportunity to make it a 3-0 game. Despite the deficit, the Soaring Eagles halted Alfred's run a short two minutes later. EC established possession in the final third and got the ball into the danger area. After a pass deflected off of an Alfred defender, rookie
Kaitlyn Bickham '23 corralled the ball and fired a curling effort into the bottom right corner of the goal for her first career tally.
Elmira was unable to capitalize on its momentum, however, as Alfred managed to tack on a pair of goals to seal the victory.
