ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Despite battling back to win the third set, the Elmira College women's volleyball team was unable to overcome a two-sets-to-none deficit on Wednesday evening, as EC fell to the visiting Express of Wells College in Speidel Gymnasium.
The Soaring Eagles (6-12) struggled to contain the Express' (4-14) high-powered and consistent attack. The trio of Jackie Allen, Maritza Scharoun, and Jazzmyne Williams finished with 18, 13, and 12 kills, respectively. Elmira was able to contend with Wells from the service line, as the Purple and Gold finished the match with a 13-4 edge in aces.
After falling in the opening two sets, 25-14 and 25-17, respectively, Elmira came alive in the third stanza. The Purple and Gold rattled off 11 consecutive points, highlighted by three-straight aces from
Lydia Milligan '21, to take a commanding 11-1 advantage. The Express started to find their way back into the set, but a kill from
Sabrina Didas '20 pushed EC's lead back to six at 23-17.
Kelsey Lofvenborg '22 brought the set to a close three points later with a stellar ace, giving Elmira a 25-18 win.
The fourth set was a back-and-forth affair as the Soaring Eagles fought to force a deciding fifth set. Elmira forged ahead of the visitors at 14-12 on the heels of a 4-0 run that was spurred on by a pair of aces from Milligan. Wells eventually reclaimed the lead at 20-19 following a kill from Scharoun.
