SCRANTON, Pa. -- Elmira College women's basketball faced its toughest test of the season on Wednesday evening, as the Soaring Eagles battled No. 2 nationally-ranked University of Scranton in the opening round of the Hilton Scranton Poinsettia Classic. The host Royals of Scranton claimed a 95-43 win to remain perfect on the year at 8-0, while the Purple and Gold dropped to 2-6.
Scranton controlled today's contest with precision shooting and a concentrated effort on defense. The Royals connected at a 50% clip on 35-of-70 shooting from the field, which included a blistering 48.1% mark from 3-point range (13-of-27). Additionally, the Royals forced 22 Elmira turnovers, which resulted in 20 points.
Elmira went 17-for-57 (29.8%) from the floor and 4-for-17 (23.5%) from beyond the arc. More than half of Elmira's point production came from the bench, as five bench players combined for 22 points.
Taylor Johnson '23 led the charge offensively for the Soaring Eagles with a 10-point performance in an effort off of the bench. The rookie went 4-for-8 from the field, including a 2-for-5 mark from 3-point range, and pulled down four rebounds to go along with one assist. Eight of her 10 points were registered in the fourth quarter.
Second-year guard
Alyssa Waters '22 was not far behind in the scoring department, as she added nine points and one assist. Waters was 4-for-9 from the field with a 1-for-3 showing from beyond the arc.
Emily Breheny '20 and
Taylor Albrecht '22 tied for the team lead in rebounds with eight apiece. Albrecht, whose eight rebounds were a career high, pulled down a game-high four offensive rebounds and chipped in five points. Meanwhile,
Mykenzie Malacusky '23 logged a team-high four assists to go along with two rebounds and one steal.
