ALFRED, N.Y. -- Despite leading for the majority of the Empire 8 Conference battle on Wednesday evening, the Elmira College women's basketball team was unable to fend off a late barrage from Alfred University, as the Saxons stormed back in the fourth quarter to steal a 67-57 victory.
A hot shooting second half propelled Alfred past the Purple and Gold, as the Saxons caught fire from beyond the arc following the break, going 8-for-14 (57.1%) from deep in the second half. EC controlled the game in the paint, outscoring the Saxons 32-20 down low. Despite the Soaring Eagles post proficiency, they couldn't keep up with the run-and-gun style of the Saxons, as Alfred outscored EC 20-7 on the fast break and poured in 29 points in the fourth quarter to earn the E8 win.
A trio of Soaring Eagles finished in double-digits, led by
Sally Hogan '19, who finished with 17 points in 17 minutes of action.
Lindsey Heaton '19 finished with 15 points, while
Lauren Franklin '20 added 11. The Saxons were paced by Lyndsey McCoy, who finished with 25 points, 15 of which came from behind the 3-point line.
Elmira built an early lead against Alfred on the road, as the Soaring Eagles scored the first seven points of the game through Heaton and
Alyssa Waters '22. EC kept its foot on the gas from there, as the Purple and Gold headed into the second half with a 29-21 advantage.
The Soaring Eagles maintained their lead through the third quarter as they took a seven point advantage into the fourth. A barrage of treys from Wilcox to open the final quarter gave the Saxons their first lead with 7:43 left in the contest. A 6-0 run from the Purple and gold knotted the score at 52-52, as EC stole the ball on two straight possessions and finished through Heaton and Hogan to halt Alfred's momentum. A jumper from
Bridget Yaw '20 knotted the score once again with a little less than five minutes to play. EC snuck ahead following a free-throw make from Heaton, but Alfred responded with a 10-0 run to take the lead for the good.
