ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- The Elmira College baseball team was handed a second consecutive loss on Thursday afternoon, as North Carolina Wesleyan College rolled to a 14-5 non-conference win over the Soaring Eagles in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.
Through the first four games of EC's excursion through the Tar Heel State, the Soaring Eagles are 2-2, while the Battling Bishops improved to 3-1 on the young season.
Elmira's pitching staff was hit hard by North Carolina Wesleyan, as five different pitchers combined to allow 14 runs on 11 hits and eight walks. In the first start of his college career,
Garinder Singh Sarana '20 gave up only three hits in 3.0 innings, but the hard-throwing junior issued five free passes, as compared to just one strikeout.
In relief,
Declan Driscoll '22,
Connor Trower '22 and
Kyle Tubbs '22 each made their season debuts. Driscoll, a first-year southpaw, finished his 1.2 innings of work with one strikeout and no bases on balls but was touched for a pair of run home runs. Trower logged two of his three outs via strikeouts, while Tubbs found the most success of the bunch with a scoreless bottom of the eighth.
Trailing 14-1 with two outs in the top of the eighth, EC's bats came to life.
Jansen Crossley '20 singled and scored on a double off the bat of
Tommy Fogarty '20. In the next at-bat,
Harrison Zambarano '19 smacked a two-run shot for his first career home run.
Jack Donnelly '19 produced Elmira's fourth consecutive hit and touched home on a
Joey Florio '20 double, making it a 14-5 game, but Florio was thrown out trying to take an extra base on the play to end the inning.
