PINE VALLEY, N.Y. -- Rookie
Curtis Harris '22 and
Ravi Chauma '21 were double-winners for the Elmira College men's tennis team, but their efforts weren't enough to vault the Soaring Eagles to a victory, as visiting Pennsylvania College of Technology prevailed in non-league action by a 6-3 final score.
Harris and Chauma began their afternoon by teaming up for an 8-5 win at second doubles. The doubles victory was the first of Harris' collegiate career, and for Chauma it was his first of the 2018-19 campaign.
Unfortunately, Penn College went on to claim a pair of 8-4 wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions, which sent the Wildcats into the singles portion of today's contest with a 2-1 advantage.
In singles action, Harris rolled past Penn College's Blake Whitmire, 6-0, 6-2, at the No. 3 spot. The win was Harris' second in as many matches, as he improved to 2-1 on the young season.
EC's other singles victory on the afternoon came from the racquet of Chauma at the No. 4 position. Chauma breezed to a 6-1 win in the opening set against Joseph Morrin, but Morrin did not go away quietly, as he turned the table on Chauma with a 6-2 win in the second set.
Chauma and Morrin played out a 10-point super tiebreaker in place of a third set, and even though Morrin went into the breaker with the momentum, it was Chauma who marched away with a win. Chauma edged his counterpart from Penn College by just three points, 10-7, to clinch his first singles win of the year.
Although Elmira fell in the remaining six matches, the EC men showed promise in several of those contests.
Zackarie Stedge '21 made his debut at the No. 1 position. After dropping the opening set, 6-2, Stedge pushed his opponent to the brink in the second set, but eventually fell by a single break of serve, 6-4.
Torin Nethaway '22 had a similar match at No. 6, as he lost the opening set, 6-0, before coming up short by a break of serve, 6-4, in the second frame.
Frank Endieveri III '21 showed heart in his battle at No. 5 with Penn College's Stephen Helminiak. Helminiak claimed the opening set, 6-3, before Endieveri rallied for a 6-4 victory in the second set, forcing a third-set super tiebreaker. Endieveri's comeback bid fell short though in the breaker, as Helminiak escaped with a 10-7 win.
