ROCHESTER, N.Y. – In its second Empire 8 Conference doubleheader, the Elmira College baseball team was unable to keep pace with St. John Fisher College on the road, as the Cardinals picked up a 6-0 win in game one before out-slugging the Soaring Eagles by an 11-6 margin in game two.
Game One
Elmira hung tough through four innings in the opening game, as
Garinder Singh Sarana '20 (0-2) got the start on the mound and kept the Cardinals off of the board early in the seven inning affair. Sarana threw 5.0 innings, scattering four hits and three strikeouts while giving up four runs. Despite the strong start from Sarana, EC was unable to break through against St. John Fisher's Kenneth Westbrook (3-0), who tossed 6.0 innings, giving up two hits to the Purple and Gold.
St. John Fisher broke through in the fourth inning, as Ryan Brown singled in Michael Beimel. Elmira escaped the rest of the frame unscathed, but the Cardinals' offense came alive late, posting a combined five runs in the sixth and seventh innings to seal the win.
Tommy Fogarty '20,
Jansen Crossley '20 and
Jourdan Plaisted '22 all registered hits, but EC was unable to come up with consistent offense as St. John Fisher rolled to the victory.
Game Two
Elmira's bats came alive in the second game of the afternoon, as the Soaring Eagles tagged St. John Fisher's Jared Wren and Brandon Roberts for five runs. Despite the burst at the plate, EC couldn't slow down the Cardinals at the dish, as the home side scratched across 11 runs.
Taber Carter '21 (0-1) took the loss for the Soaring Eagles on the mound, while Brandon Roberts (1-0) was credited with the win for the Cardinals.
St. John Fisher jumped ahead early with a four-run second inning, but Elmira was able to get one back in the top of the third. With one out, Plaisted reached base on a wild pitch and moved to second following a single from classmate
Jared Money '22. A fielder's choice upped the pressure on EC, but
Mason Ryan '22 worked a walk to load the bases and Fogarty followed that up with a walk of his own, which plated Money. The Soaring Eagles couldn't capitalize from there, as a deep fly out ended the scoring threat.
The scoring continued to go back-and-forth from there, with EC adding a pair in the top of the fifth frame. A RBI single from Fogarty and a sacrifice fly from Crossley were the difference makers, but the Cardinals responded in the bottom of the inning with two runs of their own to make it an 8-3 game.
Harrison Zambarano '19 launched his third homer of the season in the fifth, but the damage was already done as the Cardinals held on for an 11-5 win.
