PINE VALLEY, N.Y. -- The Elmira College men's tennis team suffered its first setback within Empire 8 Conference action, as the visiting Saxons of Alfred University topped the Soaring Eagles, 9-0. For the Saxons, it marked their first league victory.
Although the Soaring Eagles displayed strong doubles performances during their back-to-back E8 wins over The Sage Colleges and Utica College, the Saxons opened Friday's bout by taking all three doubles points. The tandem of
Stephen Gervase '20 and
Zackarie Stedge '21 showcased their resiliency at the No. 1 position, coming back from an early deficit to pull within one game of Saxons' Ryan Brown and Logan Cross, but Alfred's top duo won two of the final three games to secure a hard-fought 8-6 victory.
Gervase, a three-time Empire 8 Player of the Week honoree, showcased his grit once again on the No. 1 singles court in an intense battle with Peter Smock of Alfred. Smock took the first set with relative ease, 6-1, but EC's junior netter opened the second set by taking the first three games, ultimately forcing a 10-point super tiebreaker with a 6-4 triumph. However, Smock eventually prevailed in the breaker, 10-6, to secure a three-set victory.
The remaining five matches on court saw the Saxons win each in straight sets to secure the 9-0 win. Elmira nearly forced a third set at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 singles, but EC's
Curtis Harris '22,
Ravi Chauma '21 and
Frank Endieveri III '21, respectively, were edged in those sets by a single break of serve.
