Women's Lacrosse Outmatched on the Road By Utica in E8 Action

UTICA, N.Y. -- Junior midfielder Rachael Goetz '20 scored two goals for the Elmira College women's lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon in a 19-2 Empire 8 Conference loss at Utica College.

The two-goal output marked the fifth multi-goal game of the 2019 spring campaign for Goetz, while the Lake View, New York, native extended her goal-scoring streak to three consecutive games. Earning assists on Goetz's tallies were fellow junior middie Kate Gibson '20 and first-year attacker Mikayla Carfello '22.

Utica, however, finished the bout with a 46-to-10 advantage on shots. The Pioneers fueled their offense with a dominant performance on the draw, as they won 17-of-22 draw controls while rolling out to a 9-0 lead before EC halted its scoreless drought.

Elmira goalies Kacie Pierce '21 and Krystyna Lilland '21 each played a half between the pipes. In addition to grabbing five ground balls apiece, Pierce made 11 stops in the opening half, and Lilland recorded five saves in the final 30 minutes of regulation.

Goetz secured two ground balls and one draw control to go along with her two goals. Alicia Johnson '22 also collected a pair of ground balls and caused one turnover for the Purple and Gold.

Pacing the Pioneers' offense was the duo of Kaitlynn Palmer (2g-3a) and Katie McDowell (2g-3a) with five points each. Lexi Scaccia chipped in a game-high four goals for Utica.

  • With two goals against the Pioneers, Goetz increased her season total to 18 goals in just 10 games.
  • Carfello dished out her second assist to extend her team-leading point total to 22 (20g-2a).
  • Gibson's assist was her team-best fifth of the season.

  • In her 13th start, Pierce recorded her fourth game with double-digit saves.
  • Both Elmira goalies have reached 100 saves on the year, as Pierce leads the tandem with 164, followed by Lilland with 100.
