ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- In a pivotal Empire 8 Conference doubleheader, the Elmira College softball team dropped two hard-fought games on the road to Nazareth College. The Golden Flyers earned a 3-0 shutout win in the opening game, before edging Elmira by a single run, 5-4, in the nightcap.

Game One
Nazareth's starting pitcher, Gabriella Corasaniti, was the difference in the opening game. Corasaniti tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing just two hits while striking out three batters.

Elmira threatened in both the fifth and seventh innings, as Ally Barr '21 and Maddy Johnson '19 led off both innings with a pair of singles, respectively. However, the next batters in both innings hit into double plays, ending the EC threat.

The Golden Flyers did all of their damage on offense in the first two innings, plating two in the bottom of the first and another in the bottom of the second.

Mckenzie Slaven '20 got the start in the pitcher's circle for the Soaring Eagles and tossed 7.0 innings of three-run ball. She allowed 11 hits, three walks and three runs.

Game Two
Nazareth jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the nightcap, as the Golden Flyers scored twice in the bottom of the second inning. However, the Soaring Eagles answered in the top of the third inning by putting a three-spot on the scoreboard.

Felicity Brockhuizen '22 singled on a full count the lead-off the inning, and following a pop out, Johnson reached safely on a bunt single to the pitcher. Rachel Katzenberger '19 advanced the runners to second and third, before Sarah Garner '20 smashed a three-run homer to center field, putting the Purple and Gold on top, 3-2.

Elmira threatened again in the top of the fourth inning, as Bianca Palese '21 and Brockhuizen reached safely on singles, but EC was unable to drive in either runner.

Nazareth, on the other hand, was able to plate one run in the bottom half of the fourth on a Janelle Walters single. The Golden Flyers went on to score one run in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings to claim a 5-3 lead, as the Soaring Eagles were held scoreless in the top half of the aforementioned innings.

In the top of the seventh, Johnson led off the inning with a five-pitch walk, but back-to-back outs on the ensuing at-bats put EC on its heels. However, on the next at bat, EC's Barr worked a full count and singled through the heart of the infield to plate Johnson from second and cut the Nazareth lead to just one, 5-4. Unfortunately, this was as close as Elmira got, as Nazareth got the next batter to strike out to secure a one-run victory.

Barr got the start in the pitcher's circle and logged 6.0 innings. She allowed five runs on 10 hits.

Garner led the charge on offense with a 2-for-4 showing with three RBIs and one run scored. Barr also went 2-for-4 at the dish with an RBI, while Brockhuizen went 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Johnson, Slaven, Palese and Sam Chadbourne '19 all logged one hit apiece.
