ELMIRA, N.Y. -- A strong first-half effort kept the Elmira College women's soccer team within striking distance, but the Bombers from Ithaca College were able to pull away in the second half to secure a 4-0 victory over the Soaring Eagles on Campus Field.
Ithaca (4-2-1), a Liberty League semifinalist and NCAA Tournament qualifier a year ago, finished with a significant advantage in shots (37-to-2) and corner kicks (10-to-1). However, freshman goalkeeper
Ally Knorr-Anderson '23 logged a season-high-tying 10 saves, and the starting backline of
Kelly Keegan '23,
Megan Diem '21,
Hailey Boris '21,
Tatiana Ivery '20, and
Taylor Wilms '22 did enough to hold the visitors to a single tally in the first 45 minutes.
In the 48th minute, the Soaring Eagles (1-4-0) found themselves with an opportunity to level the score at 1-all on a corner kick. Boris sent the ball into the box from the left corner to
Zoya Katta '21, but with heavy traffic on the goal line, an Ithaca defender was able to block the shot and the Bombers cleared the ball with a quick counter-attack.
Despite a spirited effort, EC was unable to sustain possession against an aggressive Ithaca squad, which went on to post three additional goals in the 57th, 74th and 80th minutes en route to the win.
