ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College women's soccer team was defeated in the 2019 Empire 8 Conference opener on Saturday afternoon, as the visiting Gators from The Sage Colleges collected a 6-1 victory over the Soaring Eagles at Campus Field.
The Gators (4-2-0, 1-0-0 E8) started the conference opener by controlling possession in the attacking zone. As a result, Sage netted a pair of goals in the first half and led by two at the intermission.
However, after being held to just four shots in the first 45 minutes of action, the Soaring Eagles (1-5-0, 0-1-0 E8) racked up 14 in the second period. One of those shots came on a penalty kick awarded to
Taylor Hanson '21 in the 48th minute, but Sage keeper Kallan Shertzer dove to her left to deny the junior striker.
Trailing by five late in regulation, Hanson avenged her missed opportunity with her second tally of the season. Fellow junior
Hailey Boris '21 fired the ball from the left side, but her attempt caromed off of the crossbar. Luckily, it went right to Hanson on the opposite side of the box, and the Chatham, New York, native spoiled Sage's shutout attempt.
