Keane Lifts Women's Soccer Past Medaille in OT Thriller

ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College women's soccer team earned a come-from-behind victory in dramatic fashion on Tuesday afternoon, as the Soaring Eagles (2-5-0) downed the visiting Mavericks of Medaille College (3-5-0) by a final score of 2-1 on historic Campus Field.

Taylor Keane '23 played hero for the Purple and Gold, as the first-year forward scored the game-winner 59 seconds into the overtime period. Nicole Hanselman '20 started the scoring play off by winning the ball from a Medaille defender before charging into the box. Hanselman lost her footing, but the senior's efforts pushed the ball into the path of Keane. The Cooperstown, New York, native made no mistake, firing a shot that skipped off of the hands of the Mavericks' Shae Messemer and into the back of the net.

Keane's goal was the end-product of a consistent attack by the Purple and Gold throughout the contest. EC ended the affair with a 22-14 advantage in shots, with 11 finding their way on target. While each side only earned one corner kick, Elmira continually tested the Medaille defense in and around the 18-yard box.

EC slipped behind late in the first half following a set piece from the Mavs. After a shot from Medaille's Marissa Campbell rattled the crossbar, the ball rebounded out to the edge of the box, where a shot from Emma Campagna was unfortunately redirected off an EC defender for an own goal. The Soaring Eagles were undeterred, however, as Elmira continued to surge forward during the second half.

That effort payed off in the 77th minute, as the Soaring Eagles knotted the score at 1-1. Taylor Hanson '21 charged into the box and was dragged down by a Mavs defender to earn a penalty kick. Hailey Boris '21 answered the call to take the spot-kick and didn't disappoint. The junior calmly rifled a shot into the upper right corner to swing the momentum back into EC's favor.

In her own words…
Head Coach Kaitlyn Mallernee on the team's gutsy performance in today's win…
"I don't believe today was our best performance, but what matters is that we were able to deliver two goals when we were down. The heart to continue onward without giving up is becoming our new cultural standard. That mantra was well-represented today when our players found a way to unlock their defense and find the back of the net to end the match. This win feels good as we head into our next Empire 8 match on Saturday."
