ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College women's volleyball team was caught in a back-and-forth affair on Friday evening that went the other way, as the Highlanders of Houghton earned a three-sets-to-one victory over the Soaring Eagles in Speidel Gymnasium.
With the win, Houghton improved to 10-2 overall with a 1-0 mark in Empire 8 Conference play, while EC moved to 5-11 overall and 1-1 in E8 action.
Despite attacking at a season-best .240 clip, the Purple and Gold were unable to contend with Houghton's multi-faceted attack. The Highlanders' Ally Bittinger posted a match-high 17 kills, while Brooke Lewandowski, Amy Huddell and Jaimee Glendenning all finished in double figures.
Elmira's offense flowed through
Savannah Terry '21 and
Lauren Smith '21, who finished with 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Terry had an extremely efficient night with a .429 attacking percentage.
Kassi Hastings '21 orchestrated EC's attack with 37 assists.
Elmira came flying out of the gates, as the Soaring Eagles earned a 25-19 win in the opening set. The Purple and Gold set the tone early in the frame, as a 4-0 run punctuated by a block from Smith and
Kaylene Sauschuck '22 gave EC an 8-4 lead. Elmira never relinquished its advantage, opening up a seven-point advantage at 19-12 following a kill from Sauschuck. It was smooth sailing from there, as the Soaring Eagles took a 1-0 lead.
The second set of the evening was hotly contested as EC looked for a two-sets-to-none lead. After slipping behind early,
Lydia Milligan '21 and
Amelia Martin '23 floored back-to-back kills to kickstart a 3-0 run that put Elmira up 14-11. Martin pushed the Soaring Eagles ahead, 23-20, with a pair of kills, but the Highlanders came roaring back to take the set 27-25.
With the momentum on their side, the Highlanders edged out the Soaring Eagles by a slim 25-23 margin in the third set, setting up a pressure-filled fourth stanza. Houghton carried its momentum over from the previous frame and opened an early lead over EC. The Purple and Gold fought back as the set carried on, using a 4-0 run to fend off match point and bring the score to 24-20. It was too little, too late, however, as the Highlanders held on for the victory.
