PINE VALLEY, N.Y. -- The No. 3 nationally-ranked Elmira College women's ice hockey team showcased its offensive might on Sunday afternoon, as the Soaring Eagles skated to an 11-1 victory over United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) newcomer Alvernia at the Murray Athletic Center.
With the win, Elmira improved to 10-2-2 overall and 6-1-0 in UCHC play. The Golden Wolves moved to 4-11-0 and 1-7-0 in conference play during their inaugural season. The 11-goal outburst was led by
Eliza Beaudin '22 and
Morgan Mordini '22 who finished with three points apiece. Beaudin potted two goals and added an assist, while Mordini finished with one goal and a pair of helpers.
Elmira opened the first period with a goal at 1:01. The scoring play began behind EC's net, as an outlet pass from Hanson set up a two-on-one rush. After receiving
Bella Hanson's '21 pass, Beaudin pushed it ahead to Mordini, who carried it into the slot before sliding it back to Beaudin for the one-time finish at the left post.
Jenny Heath '22 doubled Elmira's lead with a tally at 14:41, her third goal of the season. A turnover by the Wolves in their own defensive zone went right to Heath at the point, where she fired a wrist shot towards net. Her attempt caromed off of an Alvernia defender and into the net for the goal.
Beaudin produced her second goal of the period, this one once again following an Alvernia turnover, to give the Elmira women a 3-0 lead. Beaudin intercepted a pass in the neutral zone and raced towards net, before beating Alvernia's Isabelle Hovel through the five hole for the goal.
Shortly after, on a 5-on-4 power play,
Jess Adams '21 padded the Purple and Gold's lead to 4-0 with a little over two minutes to play. A pass from the right post by
Tristen Tolan '21 found Adams in the slot, where she one-timed the puck into the open side-netting for the tally.
Jordan Holt '23 was also credited with an assist on the goal, as her dump pass deep into the zone set up the scoring play.
Another turnover in the defensive zone resulted in an EC tally, as Holt produced her first career goal. Mordini set up the scoring play with a pass to Holt at the blue line. From there, the rookie rifled a shot that beat Alvernia's Hovel over her right shoulder.
The second period got off to a quick start, as a mishandled pass by Elmira in its own offensive zone allowed Abby Reisinger to race down ice and set up a one-on-one with Elmira's
Elizabeth Hanson '21. Reisinger took advantage of the golden opportunity and buried a wrist shot past Hanson for the goal just 26 seconds into the second stanza.
Mordini scored her second goal of the game late in the frame to put Elmira back on top by five tallies, 6-1. A pass from Heath at the point found Mordini at the left faceoff dot, where wrapped around and dumped a pass to
Emma Crocker '21. From there, Mordini found space in the slot, at which point Crocker centered a pass that set Mordini up for the goal, as she backhanded it over Hovel's shoulder.
In the third period, Elmira added to its lead with a goal from
Brooke McArdle '22, her first of the season. The scoring play began with
Kiana Melvin '20, who fired a shot from the blue line and was initially saved by Alvernia's Hovel, but the rebound leaked out into the slot. From there,
Emma Edgington '23 followed up with a shot on goal that was saved, but McArdle was there to punch in the rebound for the tally.
Ariella Haas '22 made it an 8-1 Elmira lead shortly after the McArdle goal.
Amanda Zenstein '21 began the play behind the Elmira cage and sent an outlet pass to
Devyn Gilman '21. The Yorba Linda, California, native took the puck from coast-to-coast, before dishing it to Haas for the one-time finish.
Melvin made it a 9-1 lead with an absolute rocket from just outside the left faceoff circle. Crocker began the scoring play by winning an in-zone faceoff, which allowed Beaudin to creep in and slide a pass to Melvin, who whizzed the puck past Hovel for the goal.
Less than two minutes trickled off the clock before Elmira's next goal, one that put the squad up by nine goals, 10-1.
Kelly Matthews '23 started the play with a cross ice pass to Zenstein at the blue line. The sophomore lined up a shot and fired away, sending the puck towards goal. Rookie
Kelly Millins '23 was camped in front of the net and redirected the shot into the back of the net.
Mary McCafferty '22 increased the Elmira lead to 10 at 13:58 by scoring her second of the season. Haas began the scoring play by intercepting a pass in the Alvernia zone, before sliding a pass into the slot to McCafferty, who buried a wrist shot over Hovel's right shoulder for the goal.
