PINE VALLEY, N.Y. – Despite a valiant effort on the defensive side of the ball, the Elmira College Field Hockey team came up on the wrong side of a 4-0 decision against St. John Fisher College on Sunday afternoon. After a scoreless first half, Fisher notched the game-winner just a minute into the third period on a penalty stroke goal.
JUST THE BASICS:
SCORE: Elmira 0, St. John Fisher 4
LOCATION: Pine Valley, N.Y.
TEAM RECORDS: Elmira (0-9, 0-4 E8), Fisher (6-5, 4-0 E8)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Soaring Eagles used their grass home field advantage in the first half, forcing the Cardinals into an uncomfortable state on the offensive through the first 30 minutes of play. Despite Fisher going for eight shots and 12 penalty corners in the frame, an increased output on the defensive end for Elmira kept the game scoreless at halftime.
Headed into the second half, it took just a minute for Fisher to crack the scoreboard, as the Cardinals were awarded a penalty stroke. After Bre Socker converted the attempt, the Cardinals would go on to score a pair of goals over the next five minutes to increase their lead to 3-0.
After holding the opposition to 8 shots in the first half, Elmira surrendered 18 shots in the third quarter, which SJFC was able to execute on three times.
After being subbed out midway through the third period,
MeganRae Burke '24 finished her afternoon allowing three goals, while making nine saves in frame.
Bella DeAmelia '24 came on in relief for the final 25 minutes of play, allowing one goal while recording eight saves.
