ELMIRA, N.Y. -- In a wild 12-inning affair, one that withstood an hour long lightning delay, Elmira College (3-21, 1-9 E8) baseball came up short to league-leading St. John Fisher College (22-5, 13-1 E8), 17-12.
Â
The Soaring Eagles led by as many as three runs, 12-9, as late as the seventh inning but the Cardinals rallied with runs in the top of the seventh, eighth and ninth innings to force extras. Elmira wasn't without its chances to claim the win, as the Purple and Gold had runners in scoring position in the 10
th and 11
th innings.
Â
In the 10
th,
Luke Frontale '22 reached safely on an error and advanced to second base with no outs. Unfortunately, that was as far around the bases as he would get.
Â
Then in the 11
th,
James Delaney '21 led off with a walk and
Mason Ryan '22 singled to place runners on first and second with no outs. However, Fisher's defense stymied the Elmira men and held EC scoreless.
Â
Fisher broke through in the top of the 12
th with a five spot, scoring four of the five runs with two outs to secure the 17-12 victory.
Â
Ryan led the Elmira offense with a 3-for-5 showing at the plate with two walks and two runs scored. Delany was 2-for-6 with one walk and one run, while
Jourdan Plaisted '21 went 2-for-3 with one RBI, two walks and three runs scored.
Â
Joe Morrone '22 went 2-for-5 with two walks, one run scored, and tied for the team lead in RBIs with two.
Myles Littlejohn '24 was EC's final multi-hit producer with a 2-for-7 showing with one run and shared the team lead in RBIs with two.
Â
A slew of pitchers saw action for the Soaring Eagles this evening.
Michael Millross '24 had the most impressive outing, allowing no run on one hit and two strikeouts in 2.0 innings of action.
Â
David Kruis '23 allowed two hits, one walk, and no runs in one inning. He also struck out one batter.
Kyle Tubbs '22 only pitched one-third of an inning, but it was a big one, as he stranded two runners in the top of the eighth inning and sent the Soaring Eagles into the bottom half of the inning with a one-run lead.
