ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College received an outstanding performance by its pitching staff on Saturday afternoon, as the No. 13 Cardinals did not allow a run in a doubleheader sweep of Elmira College.
On the afternoon when the Soaring Eagles (5-17, 4-12 E8) recognized graduating seniors
Janie Kempf '21 and
Paige Cring '21 as part of Class of 2021 Recognition Day, the Cardinals (25-3. 19-1 E8) held EC to just two hits.

Ally Barr '21 and SJFC starter Emily Trotman were deadlocked in a classic pitchers' duel in the early matchup. After Trotman hit a lead-off single back up the box in the first, Barr retired eight in a row. The Pine City, New York, native helped her own cause by fielding a pair of comebackers in the first and second innings. In the third, she worked around a two-out hit with a three-pitch strikeout against Maria Marcera.
Fisher broke the shutout in the top of the fifth with a two-out RBI single from Marcera. The Cardinals added two more two-out runs in the sixth, and a sac fly in the seventh.
On the other hand, the Soaring Eagles simply couldn't solve Trotman. The senior from East Amherst, New York, faced one over the minimum. An inside pitch that plunked
Bella DeAmelia '24 in the third was the only thing between Trotman and a perfect game.

The Cardinals pounded out 14 runs on 17 hits and put up at least two runs in four of the five innings played in the nightcap.
The Soaring Eagles had more success at the plate in the late game. In addition to a pair of walks issued by Jess Patterson,
Alex Brockhuizen '22 laced a double just fair inside third base in the fourth, and
Kennedi Roman '23 flared a single into center field against reliever Jenna Leydecker in the fifth. Neither player made it beyond second base, however.
All three EC pitchers saw time in the circle. Barr got another start and struck out one in 1.1 innings before giving way to
Jillian Cortez '23. Cortez tossed a team-high 2.2 innings and struck out a pair. In the fifth,
Kristen Aasheim '24 made her second relief appearance of the season and finished with one punch out.
