ALFRED, N.Y. -- After going down 2-0 with four minutes to play in the first half, the Elmira College women's soccer team would answer with a goal of their own but could not find another as they fell on the road to Alfred State on Sunday afternoon. One minute after conceding their second goal, the Soaring Eagles answered after
Rachel Bortnick' 25 received a pass from
Adrianna Cornell '24, split two defenders at the top of the penalty area, and buried the ball in the back of the net. In the second half, the Soaring Eagles would search for an equalizer but were not able to break through despite winning two corner kicks and creating four shots.
JUST THE BASICS:
SCORE: Elmira 1, Alfred State 2
LOCATION: Alfred, NY
TEAM RECORDS: Elmira (1-3, 0-0 E8), Alfred State (3-1, 0-0 AE)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Alfred State would start the scoring in the 25
th minute after winning a ball at midfield and sending a long through ball down the right sideline to Madison Kice. Kice ran the ball down and found Grace Collins open at the top of the 18-yard box. Collins took a one-timer with her right foot and found the back of the left side of the net to make it 1-0.
Then in the 41st minute, the Pioneers won a corner on the right side of goal. The kick was launched directly into the 6-yard box where Elmira keeper
Nevaeh Winston '25 jumped to make the catch but was just short and it fell into the front of goal. Kice was there and knocked it in, pushing the lead to 2-0.
The Purple & Gold would not go away easily though, and just a minute later Bortnick cut the lead back to one with her second goal of the season. Cornell picked up an errant pass by an Alfred State defender around midfield and quickly found Bortnick up ahead. After Bortnick took the pass on the left side of the field, she split two defenders at the top of the 18-yard box and found herself one-on-one with the keeper and calmly sent it into the right side of goal.
