ELMIRA, N.Y. – A goal just four minutes into the game was all the Statesmen needed, as Hobart went on to take a 2-0 victory over the Soaring Eagles on Friday evening. On Forever 2Six Night in honor of the great Billy Lowe, the Elmira College Men's Ice Hockey team skated to a very competitive matchup between the NEHC's top-two teams, but came up short after Hobart concluded the scoring on an empty-net goal with just over 30 seconds remaining in the contest.
JUST THE BASICS:
SCORE: No. 8 Elmira 0, No. 6 Hobart 2
LOCATION: Elmira, New York | First Arena
TEAM RECORDS: Elmira (12-4-1, 6-3-1 NEHC), Hobart (13-3-1, 8-1-1 NEHC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
In front of a crowd of 2,688 Soaring Eagle faithful, Hobart was able to quiet the crowd early after Blake Coffey scored in the 5th minute of play (4:09) on an assist from Jonah Alexander. As play continued, Elmira held the 13-9 advantage in shots during the first period, with Chris Janzen '21 recording eight saves.
Elmira earned chances throughout the contest, outshooting the Statesmen 35-34, but Hobart goaltender Liam Lascelle was able to record saves on each of the opportunities.
Neither team was able to convert on their power-play opportunities, as the Soaring Eagles (0-for-4) had just one less chance than the Statesmen (0-for-5) in the physical, back-and-forth contest.
Janzen would be credited with the loss in net despite one of his best efforts of the season, recording 32 saves on 33 opportunities.
UP NEXT:
The Soaring Eagles return to the ice against the Statesmen tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Geneva for a 4:00 PM slate.
