STAUNTON, Va. – The Elmira College baseball team suffered a 16-1 setback to the Fighting Squirrels from Mary Baldwin on Friday afternoon. It marked the first nine-inning contest of the season for the Soaring Eagles, who held MBU off the board through three innings before a six-run attack with ten batters sent to the plate propelled the Fighting Squirrels to a 6-1 lead.
Ray Mineo '22 would be tabbed with the loss for Elmira after allowing three runs (all earned) over 3.1 innings pitched. Mineo allowed just one hit on the afternoon but walked four and hit to batters.

KEY MOMENT:
- The Fighting Squirrels were able to score six runs in the bottom of the 4th inning after Elmira tacked on a run in the top half on an RBI double from Joe Morrone '22. In the inning, MBU sent ten to the plate, recording three hits while working three walks.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Soaring Eagles held Mary Baldwin hitless through the first two innings before Michael Robertson singled to open the frame. Mineo was able to eliminate trouble to inducing a double play ball before working out of the inning.
In the top half of the third,
Brett Warden '25 tripled to open the inning before Morrone, who finished the afternoon 2-for-4, doubled home Warden with one away to push EC ahead 1-0.
In the bottom half, the Fighting Squirrels brought ten batters to the plate, scoring six runs.
Logan Pizzullo '25 came on in relief of Mineo and allowed three runs on three hits over 0.2 innings.
After a quiet 5
th inning, Mary Baldwin would send 13 to the plate in the 6
th, scoring seven runs on four hits while taking advantage of a pair of Soaring Eagle errors.
Michael Millross '24 made his third appearance of the season, allowing seven runs (two earned) on five hits while striking out one.
Liam Wedge '25 came on in relief of Millross, working 1.1 innings of work while allowing just three hits.
Warden came on in relief of Wedge in the 8
th and allowed three runs (zero earned) while allowing four hits to spark the Fighting Squirrels to a 16-1 victory.
STATS & NOTES:
- Wedge made his collegiate debut against the Fighting Squirrels, allowing no runs over 1.1 IP.
- The Soaring Eagles surrendered just eight earned runs on the afternoon as three errors led to eight unearned runs.
- Mason Ryan '22 recorded a pair of hits as the senior has now recorded at least one hit in four of his teams' first five games.
- Jourdan Plaisted '21& Joe Morrone '22 both recorded multi-hit games as they now have three and two multi-hit games on the season, respectively.
- The Fighting Squirrels picked up its first home victory in program history. Mary Baldwin's inaugural season was in 2021.
