Soaring Eagles Defeat Wilkes in Straight-Sets on Saturday Afternoon

WILKES-BARRE, Pa.  – The Elmira College men's volleyball team made a quick trip to Pennsylvania to take on non-conference opponent Wilkes University on Saturday afternoon, picking up a straight-sets victory over the Colonels to improve its record to 8-2 on the season. 

The Soaring Eagles would take each of the three sets in relatively competitive fashion, defeating the Colonels 25-18, 25-19, and 25-19 en route to victory. Elmira would hit a strong .306% in the match, which included a .500% mark in the third and final set. 

Neiram Galan-Canales '23 would get the start at libero for the Soaring Eagles, finishing the afternoon with 20 set assists while Ayden Herried '26 chipped in ten of his own. From the attacking positions, Alberto Maurcio '25 and Oscar Munoz Trinidad '23 would record 11 and ten kills, respectively.

After Wilkes took eight of nine points in the middle of the first set to take a 12-9 lead, Elira would put together a stretch of scoring 10 of the next 12 points, capped by a service ace from Munoz Trinidad to regive Elmira the lead at 22-17. After a point from the Colonels, it would be the Soaring Eagles who would score the final three points of the set with Haenhyanonhna Powless '23 at the service position to take the first set, 25-18. 

From there, Elmira would open the second set by taking five of the first seven points, while using a .303 hitting percentage in the second set to jump out to an early 2-0 lead in the match. 

In the third, a match-best .500 hitting percentage would propel the Soaring Eagles to its same set score from the second, going on to take the match 3-0 from the Colonels.

The Soaring Eagles will return home next Saturday, jumping back into UVC play when taking on Vassar with a 2:00 PM first serve inside Speidel Gymnasium.
