ELMIRA, N.Y. – Elmira women's basketball returned to Speidel Gymnasium for a midweek contest against the Highlanders of Houghton University on Tuesday afternoon. After leading at halftime 30-28, the Soaring Eagles could not continue their offensive output in the second half and fell by a final score of 71-45.
Laura Bogota '25 and Nevaeh Winston '25 tied for the team lead in points with ten, while Taylor Jung '25 notched nine rebounds to go along with two blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The game started promising for the Soaring Eagles as they outscored the Highlanders 19-8 in the first quarter. Bogota tallied five points in the first half while hitting one shot from beyond the arc that tied the game at five with 6:40 remaining in the quarter. The Purple & Gold retook the lead with 5:22 left in the first on a Victoria Rought '25 layup, her first of two made layups in the quarter, to give EC a 9-8 lead. Elmira scored 12 unanswered to end the period and bring an 11-point lead into the second quarter.
- Houghton began the second on a 9-0 run, trimming Elmira's lead down to two before a Winston layup broke the streak. The Soaring Eagles maintained their lead throughout the quarter behind five points from Bogota and four from Winston. However, the Highlanders once more brought Elmira's lead down to two to close out the half, with EC leading 30-28.
- Elmira began the third quarter with four points from Winston and two from Jung to give the Soaring Eagles a 36-32 advantage with 7:29 left. However, this would be their last point until 22 seconds remaining in the third. Houghton scored 19 unanswered points to take a 51-36 lead until a pair of Alleney Klunk '24 free throws ended the scoring drought for Elmira. These were the final points of the quarter, and EC entered the final ten minutes down 51-38.
- A Rought layup with 4:53 left in the game was the only made field goal by the Soaring Eagles in the fourth quarter, as they were outscored 20-7 in the final period and fell in a 71-45 defeat.
- The Soaring Eagles were held without a field goal for 12:36 of game time.
