Brown and Cardello Pace Men’s Basketball in 64-54 Win against Owls

ONEONTA, N.Y. – Kelton Brown '28 and Tyler Cardello '26 combined for 30 points as the Elmira College men's basketball program improved to 2-2 on the season with a 64-54 victory against the Mississippi University for Women on Sunday at the Michael A. Freilich Classic.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Elmira trailed by as many as nine points in the first half against the Owls before mounting a comeback with just under six minutes left to play. Cardello helped to spark the rally for the Soaring Eagles with a bucket to trim the deficit to 25-22.
  • Cardello followed with another bucket to bring Elmira within a point of the Owls before getting fouled after hitting a layup to complete a 3-point play and give the Soaring Eagles a 27-25 lead with 3:29 left in the half.
  • The Soaring Eagles would take a six-point lead into the break as Brown finished a pair of layups for EC, along with a late layup from Chris Woodard '28 to make it 33-27.
  • In the second half, Elmira gained its first double-digit lead at the 10:33 mark as JJ Babcock '26 finished a layup to make it 46-36. The Owls rallied to cut Elmira's lead to 50-49 with seven minutes left following a 3-pointer from Trent Walker.
  • Carter Seeberger '26 answered the rally for the Soaring Eagles with a 3-pointer of his own, followed by a layup from Ty Barrett '27 to give Elmira a 59-51 lead. Barrett sealed the victory for Elmira, going 4-of-4 at the free-throw line over the final 46 seconds.
  • Cardello and Brown each paced Elmira with 15 points in the contest as Brown connected on seven of his nine shots from the field. Woodard recorded his first collegiate double-double as he finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Elmira went 14-of-23 from the free-throw line in the second half and finished the contest 18-of-30.
