HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Soaring Eagles would battle the Captains inside the circle through the first two innings, as Elmira starting pitcher Sobel would hold the home team to just two hits through the first two frames, while working out of a two-out, two on jam to begin the contest.
  • After Kate Alger struck out the side in the third inning for CNU, the Capitals went to work on the offensive side, striking for four runs in the bottom half of the frame. After the first two batters reached base safely via a walk and an infield single, Sobel would induce a pair of outs before three straight hits put the home team ahead 4-0 heading into the fourth.
  • From there, Sobel would record a clean fourth inning on the mound, retiring six straight batters between the end of the third and the midway point in the fifth, but the Captains would see back-to-back two-out hits from Caroline Pollack and Meredith Brickner, which brought home a run and extended their lead to 5-0.
  • Sobel would be lifted from the contest after 4.2 innings of work, where she allowed five runs (all earned) on eight hits, while walking one and striking out one. Cadey Wheat '27 would come on in relief for Sobel, allowing a sixth inning run (unearned) while going 1.1 inning where she allowed just one hit and walked a pair. Wheat would also pick up her first collegiate strikeout.
  • In the top half of the sixth, the Soaring Eagles would notch its first hit of the ballgame as Brianna Ramstine '25 reached first via an infield single. The Soaring Eagles would be set down in order from there, while the Christopher Newport tandem of Alger and Olivia Kim recorded 14 strikeouts on the afternoon in the Capitals' 6-0 victory in game one.
  • In game two, McAnelly would get the ball for the Soaring Eagles, making her collegiate debut. After allowing three to reach base in the first inning via the walk, McAnelly was able to settle in, retiring the final batter of the inning in a bases loaded jam to work out of trouble.
  • After a scoreless second for the Soaring Eagles, the Captains would get on the scoreboard following a defensive error, which allowed Delaney Nuckolus to score and put the home team ahead 1-0.
  • In the bottom of the third, a two-run home run from Pollock would put CNU ahead 3-0, ending McAnelly's afternoon. She finished going 2.1 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits, while walking four and striking out one.
  • Wheat would come on in relief, allowing five runs on six hits over the final 2.0 innings of play.
  • Ramstine would finish 1-for-3 in game two with a single to leadoff the game, while Brooke Eastman '27 recorded the other hit, an infield single, for the Soaring Eagles.
