Soaring Eagles Unable to Overcome Early Deficits Against Utica on Sunday Afternoon

UTICA, N.Y. – The Elmira College softball team dropped both ends of its doubleheader against Utica on Sunday afternoon, as the Pioneers took 9-4 and 11-4 victories. In each of the two contests, the Pioneers would jump out to early leads and never look back, plating a combined eight first inning runs. The Soaring Eagles would be led by Madison Brown-Bloom '24 on the offensive side, who finished 4-for-4 in game two which included a double.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • In game one, the Pioneers would plate five runs in the bottom half of the first against Soaring Eagle starting pitcher Maryann Sobel '25. After EC was set down in order to begin the contest, Utica would see each of its first five batters reach safely, which included four hits. From there, a trio of fielder's choices would put the home team ahead 5-0. 
  • Elmira would break into the scoring column in the third, fourth, and fifth innings to pull within one run. In the third, a pair of singles from Bella DeAmelia '24 and Jocelyn Jean '27 would put runners on, and DeAmelia would eventually score after a throw down on an attempted stolen base. In the fourth, EC would see back-to-back hits from Brianna Ramstine '25 and Kaitlyn Belmont '24, before an infield error for the Pioneers allowed Ramstine to score. 
  • Elmira would score two runs in the top of the fifth after Jean, Katie Distefano '24, and Ramstine each singled, before another fielding error for the Pioneers allowed a pair to score, pulling Elmira to a 5-4 deficit. 
  • The Pioneers would score a pair in the bottom of the fifth, before putting a pair on in the sixth, which ended Sobel's afternoon. For the game, she posted a line of 5.0 innings, where she allowed nine runs (seven earned) on nine hits, while walking a pair. 
  • Cadey Wheat '27 would come on in relief, while inheriting a pair of runners, tossing clean innings where the Pioneers scored on a pair of RBI groundouts, capturing a 9-4 victory. 
  • In game one, Distefano, Belmont, Ramstine, and Jean each recorded a pair of hits. 
  • In game two, the Pioneers would once again get out to a quick lead as they plated three runs in the bottom of the first against Elmira starting pitcher Cadey Wheat '27. In the inning, Utica would use three hits (all singles) and a walk to its advantage. 
  • After a quiet top of the second for Elmira, the Pioneers would score three more runs, increasing its lead to 6-0, ultimately ending Wheat's afternoon as Shelby Dawe '27 came on in relief with a pair of runners on. Following the second, Wheat would post an official line of 1.1 innings pitched where she allowed five runs on five hits, while walking and striking out a batter each. 
  • In the top of the third, Elmira would strike for a pair of runs to pull within four. After Brooke Eastman '27 was hit by a pitch to begin the frame, a single from Distefano before an outfield error from the Pioneers with Ramstine at the plate allowed two to score. 
  • In the fourth, Elmira would add another pair after each of the first four batters (Brown-Bloom (single), Riley Storrs '27 (walk), Asia Curkendall '25 (single), and Eastman (RBI single) reached base safely to begin the inning. Hannah Colwill '27 would bring home the second run for Elmira on a fielder's choice groundout. 
  • In the bottom of the fourth, the Pioneers would add another, increasing its lead to 7-4. 
  • Dawe's afternoon would end after 3.0 innings, where she allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits, while walking one and striking out one. 
  • In the bottom of the sixth, the Pioneers would plate four runs against Sobel, as she finished the final 1.2 allowing four runs on four hits, while walking one and striking out one in Utica's 11-4 victory.

The Soaring Eagles return to the field on Friday, April 12 when hosting the Highlanders from Houghton University at the Holding Point for another Empire 8 doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
