Offense Comes to Life in Game Two as Softball Splits with Guilford

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Fueled by a four-run sixth inning in the second game of a doubleheader on Thursday, the Elmira College softball program notched its first win of the season as the Purple & Gold recorded a 7-3 victory against the Guilford College Quakers. Guilford was victorious 5-0 in game one against Elmira.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Hannah Colwill opened the game for the Soaring Eagles with a single in the top of the first inning. She would then move into scoring position on a passed ball but would be stranded after the Quakers responded with a pop-up and two strikeouts.
  • Elmira looked to put together a two-out rally with a pair of walks in the second inning from Katie Distefano and Riley Storrs, but a strikeout ended the threat in the frame.
  • Guilford opened the scoring in the bottom of the inning as a leadoff double would come around to score thanks to a single to make it 1-0.
  • The defense would shine for the Purple & Gold in the third inning as catcher Ashlyn VanFleet threw out a runner trying to take second, while right fielder Brianna Ramstine threw out a runner trying to take second on a bloop single.
  • Guilford plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning as a leadoff triple, and a single would plate a run to make it 2-0. The Quakers followed with a sacrifice fly to center field to plate another run to make it 3-0.
  • A pair of defensive errors by the Soaring Eagles in the fifth inning would allow the Quakers to push their lead to 5-0 as Guilford would strand the bases-loaded.
  • Elmira looked to get onto the scoreboard in the sixth inning as Ramstine worked a leadoff walk, followed by a single from Sophia Temple that moved Ramstine to third. The Quakers would get the out at home on a ball hit back to the pitcher off the bat of Asia Curkendall.
  • Allie Mienaltowski tossed four innings for the Soaring Eagles, allowing eight hits, three runs, and one strikeout. Madison Lodowski worked one inning of relief and allowed two runs, while Shelby Dawe worked a scoreless sixth inning for Elmira.
  • Elmira scored a run in each of the first three innings of game two of the doubleheader against the Quakers. Colwill scored in the first inning off an error, while she produced a run in the second inning as she reached on a fielder's choice.
  • A four-run sixth inning pushed the Elmira advantage to 7-0 as Rachel Lunger recorded her first collegiate RBI with an infield single.
  • Colwill added her second RBI of the game with a bunt single to make it 5-0 before Temple was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 6-0. Jocelyn Jean closed the scoring with a sacrifice fly to score Colwill and make it 7-0.
  • Guilford plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to trim the deficit to 7-3 as a pair of runs scored on a triple into right field and the other run off a single.
  • Maryann Sobel recorded her first win of the season as she went five innings and worked into the sixth before giving way to the bullpen. Sobel finished with three runs allowed off seven hits.
  • Dawe tossed the final two innings and got the Purple & Gold out of a jam in the sixth inning as she yielded a pair of hits to go along with one strikeout.
  • Colwill, Distefano, and Natalie Tom each recorded two hits in the contest, while Colwill finished with two runs scored and two RBIs.

On Friday, the Soaring Eagles travel to Raleigh, North Carolina, to face Denison University and Eastern Mennonite University at the D3 Triangle Classic at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex.
