Softball Falls Twice on Friday in North Carolina

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Elmira College softball team dropped a pair of contests on Friday at the D3 Triangle Classic at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex in Raleigh, North Carolina. The Soaring Eagles would fall 5-0 in their first game of the day against Denison and rallied late in game two before coming up short against Eastern Mennonite 9-7.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Denison opened the scoring with a pair of runs off a single to right field in the bottom of the third inning to take a 2-0 lead against the Soaring Eagles.
  • The Big Red followed with a three-spot in the bottom of the fourth inning to push their lead to 5-0. Two runs scored on a double to right field, while the third run of the frame scored on a passed ball.
  • Katie Distefano recorded a pair of singles for the Soaring Eagles, while Jocelyn Jean and Rachel Lunger also added a hit for Elmira against the Big Red.
  • Despite not recording a hit in the contest, Hannah Colwill and Brianna Ramstine each worked a walk for the Purple & Gold.
  • Madison Lodowski started the contest in the circle for Elmira and finished with two runs allowed on four hits through three innings of work. Lodowski also recorded four strikeouts and three walks for EC.
  • Shelby Dawe worked 2.2 innings for Elmira to close the contest and recorded three strikeouts while surrendering a pair of hits.
  • In Elmira's second game of the day against EMU, Jean opened the scoring for the Purple & Gold with a run-scoring single in the bottom of the first inning.
  • Eastern Mennonite rallied for four runs in the top of the second as the Royals produced a run off a fielder's choice and another off an infield groundout.
  • The Royals added to their lead with a two-run home run in the fifth inning to make it 6-1.
  • Elmira would claw back in the bottom of the fifth as Brooke Eastman singled home a run before Ramstine plated two runs with a double to make it 6-4. Sophia Temple trimmed the deficit to 6-5 with an RBI groundout to second for Elmira.
  • The Royals answered with three runs in the sixth to push their lead to 9-5, while Elmira scored twice in the bottom of the frame. Asia Curkendall singled to right field to score Kristen Cole, while Eastman delivered a run-scoring single to plate Curkendall and make it 9-7.
  • Maryann Sobel suffered her first loss of the season in the circle for Elmira after allowing four runs off six hits through three innings of work. Lodowski and Dawe both worked out of the bullpen for the Soaring Eagles, while Hanna Burdick made her collegiate debut with a scoreless inning and one strikeout.


UP NEXT:
On Saturday, the Soaring Eagles wrap up their southern trip in North Carolina with a pair of contests against William Peace University and Muhlenberg College. Game one against William Peace is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
