NORTHFIELD, VT. – The Soaring Eagles women's hockey team went head-to-head with No. 12 ranked Plattsburgh State in the opening day of the East-West Classic. A thrilling overtime victory saw Elmira secure the 5-4 victory over the Cardinals.

It took the Soaring Eagles less than five minutes to take an early advantage over the Cardinals, seeing
Anna Lugge send the puck into the back of the net (1-0). A pesky Plattsburgh offense saw them evening the playing field at 6:59, 1-1. Back-to-back saves from
Sara Sevcikova gave Elmira the opportunity to recapture the lead, but the Cardinals managed to muster their second goal of the evening (2-1).
Annie Audet and Lugge worked together to move the puck up the ice, finding
Mo McBride to even the score at two apiece to close the first period.
An evenly contested second period saw the Cardinals outshooting the Soaring Eagles 14-10. Goaltender Sevcikova put work in for Elmira, recording 13 saves in the second period alone compared to the Cardinals' nine. At the 15-minute mark,
MK Boyle netted her eighth goal of the season in a power-play opportunity to recapture Elmira's lead (3-2). The Cardinals were relentless, tying the game once again in the final two minutes of the period.
The third period opened with Plattsburgh netting their fourth and final goal of the evening to steal the lead from Elmira, 4-3. At the six-minute mark, McBride and Gabby Doughtery worked to find the stick of Lugge who netted her second goal of the evening to neutralize the field, 4-4. Elmira held Plattsburgh to just three shots in the third period while Elmira created six shots on the offensive third of the ice. At the end of regulation, both teams were at a stalemate and brought the game into overtime. On the Soaring Eagles second shot attempt,
Iliana Smith found the back of the net courtesy of a Lugge assist to secure the 5-4 overtime victory.
