Elmira, N.Y. – The Elmira College field hockey team battled throughout Wednesday night's Empire 8 matchup against Hartwick College at Campus Field, but ultimately fell to the Hawks, 8-0.
LEADERS
Elara Rodriguez turned in a strong performance in the cage for the Soaring Eagles, recording 17 saves, including 10 in the opening quarter.
Nicole Luther led Elmira with two shots with one on goal, while
Gabby Warter and
Talia Nash each added a shot on goal.
Madison Fleming also recorded a shot on goal and earned a penalty stroke. Elmira finished with six shots, four shots on goal, and five penalty corners.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
Hartwick opened the scoring at the 7:13 mark of the first quarter and added a second goal at 10:05. Rodriguez kept the Soaring Eagles within striking distance throughout the opening 15 minutes, making 10 saves. Elmira created a pair of opportunities late in the quarter, with Luther putting two shots toward the cage, including one on goal. EC closed the first quarter trailing, 2-0.
The Soaring Eagles continued to generate opportunities in the second quarter. Warter put a shot on goal at 20:43 before Hartwick added two more goals to extend its lead. Elmira earned a penalty corner at 27:26, and Nash followed with a shot on goal. On the same sequence, Fleming was awarded a penalty stroke that was saved (4-0).
Hartwick added another goal in the third quarter, but Elmira continued to pressure offensively. The Soaring Eagles earned four penalty corners during the period, including back-to-back opportunities late in the quarter, while DeMaio added a shot. Rodriguez also recorded two saves during the period. The Hawks added three goals in the fourth quarter to secure the 8-0 final. Rodriguez continued to battle in the cage, making three additional saves during the final 15 minutes.

The Soaring Eagles remain at Campus Field on Saturday, October 10 as they host St. John Fisher in their annual Breast Cancer Awareness game. The contest is slated for 1:00 PM.
