Soaring Eagles Fall in Conference Doubleheader Against Brockport

HORSEHEADS, N.Y. – The Elmira College baseball team hosted the Golden Eagles of SUNY Brockport for a conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Soaring Eagles fought hard but fell in both sides of this matchup, 13-2 and 22-7.
 
GAME ONE: Soaring Eagles Stumble in First Game Against Golden Eagles
The Golden Eagles got things started early by scoring eight runs in the top of the first. Kaden Bolt reached second on an error to start the bottom of the inning and stole third base a few pitches later. A sacrifice fly by Brady Buttice brought Bolt into score to get the Soaring Eagles on the board. Brockport threatened with two runners on base in the second but could not push any additional runs across. CJ Wheaton walked with one out in the bottom of the second to get some momentum for EC. Gabriel Schultz picked up a single two batters later to put runners on the corners, but Elmira could not put up any runs in the inning. The Golden Eagles added an insurance run in the third to take a 9-1 advantage. 
 
Wheaton singled and Michael Currao walked to provide EC with a two-out scoring threat in the bottom of the fourth. The runners got left stranded though as a pop out ended the inning. The Golden Eagles tallied three more runs in the fifth inning to extend the advantage to 12-1. Connor Stone and Xander Canfield each singled with one out in the sixth inning. Later, a Ryan Price walk loaded up the bases with Soaring Eagles. The base runners would be left on as Elmira could not produce any runs. SUNY Brockport notched another run in the seventh inning to move in front 13-1. Devin Sullivan and Benjamin Intili picked up back-to-back singles in the bottom of the inning. Connor Stone hit a single up the middle to bring Sullivan into score and make the 13-2. The Golden Eagles closed out the inning and the game, Elmira falling in this one 13-2. 
 
LEADERS
Offensively, Connor Stone led the way, going 3-4 at the plate and picking up an RBI. Sullivan tallied a single in his only plate appearance, and recorded a run scored. Wheaton was 1-2 at the dish with a walk and a stolen base. 
 
GAME TWO: Soaring Eagles Slip up Against Brockport in Second Game
The Golden Eagles got off to a strong start by scoring six runs in the first and another five runs in the second to go up 11-0 early. Wheaton walked to get some momentum in the second and it was immediately followed by a Sean Deaner double down the left field line. Wheaton came into score on a groundout by Intili to get EC in the board. Brockport added another run in the third inning, extending the advantage to 12-1. Bolt picked up an infield single to get things going in the third. Canfield followed up with a single to left field to put two runners on base. Stone continued momentum with a single off his own that loaded the bases with Soaring Eagles. Buttice sent a single back up the middle that allowed Bolt to come across to score. Two batters later, Deaner lined a single back up the middle for his second hit of the contest, Canfield and Stone crossed the plate for EC, cutting the deficit to 12-4. The Golden Eagles added another run in the fourth to go back up by nine. 
 
Bolt walked to grab some momentum for EC in the fourth. He then stole second, moved to third on an error and scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 13-5. Stone reached on an error two batters later, and it was followed by Buttice getting hit by a pitch and Wheaton walking to load the bases. EC was unable to add any more runs, still trailing entering the fifth inning. The Golden Eagles scratched two more runs in the fifth to give them a 15-5 advantage. Brockport added five more runs in the following inning as they pushed themselves out in front 20-5. EC got a pair of base runners in the sixth on a single by Canfield and a double by Buttice. The Soaring Eagles could not push any runs across in the inning. The Golden Eagles scored two more in the seventh to push the advantage to 22-5. Brandon Policar led off the seventh inning with a double down the right field line. Ryan Price followed up by launching a ball over the left center field wall for his first collegiate hit and home run, making the score 22-7. Brockport closed out the contest as Elmira fell in this one 22-7.
 
LEADERS
Offensively, Deaner led the way, going 2-3 at the plate, and picking up a pair of RBIs. Ryan Price hit a two-run homer in his only plate appearance of the contest. Brady Buttice collected a pair of hits and added an RBI to his total.

UP NEXT
The Soaring Eagles return to action on Saturday April 11th for a doubleheader against two different opponents in Wilkes-Barre, PA. The first game is against the Colonels of Wilkes University and the second is against the Statesmen of Hobart College. First pitch for game one scheduled for 11:00 AM.
