Tony Deshler is in his second season at Elmira College as the Assistant Baseball Coach.
Deshler served as EC’s first assistant baseball coach in program history in 2014. He helped guide the Soaring Eagles to eight wins in their inaugural season. In addition, four of his batters hit above a .300 clip and all four earned Empire 8 All-Conference recognition.
A 2011 graduate of Brandeis University, Deshler came to Elmira with three years of coaching experience. Deshler spent two years working as the Assistant Baseball Coach and Recruiting Coordinator for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology baseball team and prior to that, he spent a year in Penrith, Australia to play and coach baseball.
During his time at MIT, Deshler assisted in all facets of the program, from organizing practices to traveling the country recruiting some of the best student-athletes in the nation. While at MIT, Deshler helped lead the Engineers to back-to-back 20-plus win seasons, the program’s first-ever NEWMAC Tournament Championship, and back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Baseball Championships.
Deshler also spent a year as a coach for the Boston Red Sox Headfirst Camps. His responsibilities included teaching all aspects of baseball, leading warm-ups, and planning out camp activities.
Prior to his time as a coach, Deshler was a four-year standout at Brandeis University where he played a variety of positions as a utility player. A two-year team captain, Deshler was a three-time All-UAA Conference Team honoree and was named the UAA Conference Rookie of the Year in 2008. Deshler exited Brandeis as the program’s second all-time leader in career hits with 207 and the program’s all-time leader in games played and started with 157.
After graduation, Deshler spent a year in the Sydney Major League where he was a player and coach. As a player, he was named the 2012 Sydney League Catcher of the Year and was also named to the Sydney League All-Star team.
Deshler is pursuing a Master’s Degree in General Education at Elmira College.
