Aurora, NY – The Women's Field Hockey team earned their first win of the 2010 season as they defeated the Wells College Express by the score of 3-1. Elmira scored an early goal and then backed it up with two second half goals solidifying the win.
Gina Maffei '13 (Wayne, NJ -- Morristown-Beard) got things started for the Purple and Gold as she notched the game's first goal at the 12:01 mark in the first half. This goal marked the first time Elmira would hold a lead in any contest during the 2010 season. Maffei would register the score during a scramble in front of the goal. Elmira would maintain the 1-0 lead going into halftime.
The Soaring Eagles would strike for two goals in the second half. The first coming at the 42:35 mark as Keisha Malone '12 (Sherrill, NY -- Verona) would score off a rebound, putting Elmira ahead 2-0. Wells would strike back with a goal of their own just 30 seconds after the Elmira score. With a tight game on their hands, the Soaring Eagles would rise to the occasion to tally another goal at the 52:21 mark. Scoring the late goal was first year talent Amanda Marks '14 (Oxford, NY -- Oxford Academy). Elmira would go on to hold the 3-1 advantage, giving them their first win since the fall of 2008.
Rookie goalie Lauren Thomas '14 (Marshfield, MA -- Marshfield) would make 4 saves in route to her first collegiate win of her career. The Soaring Eagles will look to ride today's momentum as they host conference opponent Ithaca College on Saturday, October 16th at 1:00 p.m. at the Murray Athletics Center in Pine Valley, NY.
