Morrisville, NY – The Elmira College Field Hockey team took to the field today looking to beat the Morrisville State Mustangs. The Soaring Eagles came out firing in the first half scoring three goals, but would not be able to hold off the Mustangs in overtime.
McKenna Light '14 (Marathon, NY -- Marathon) had another stellar game scoring two goals and putting four shots on goal. Light's first goal was scored two minutes into the first half where Ashley Leja '12 (Auburn, NY -- Dana L. West) crossed the ball to the center of the goalie circle for the easy goal. The second goal for the Purple and Gold came by Shannon Nelligan '14 (Poughquag, NY -- Centerbury) in the 27th minute when she drove the ball straight into the goal at the top of the goalie circle. In the 31st minute Sarah Thomassen '12 (Stewartstown, PA -- Kennard-Dale) scored off the pass from Leja putting the Soaring Eagles up 3-0 at halftime.
The Soaring Eagles had trouble in the second half giving up three consecutive goals to the Mustangs allowing the game to become tied. In the 54th minute the Soaring Eagles look to take the lead 4-3 with Thomassen assisting Light on the go ahead goal. However, the Mustangs would fight back and even the contest at 4-4 to head into overtime. In overtime, the Soaring Eagles ran out of steam and couldn't edge the Mustangs to lose 5-4.
Playing a spectacular game in goal was Lauren Thomas '14 (Marshfield, MA -- Marshfield) who made 14 saves, while the Mustang goalie made eight saves.
This brings EC's overall record to 2-9 overall and 2-2 in Empire 8. The Soaring Eagles will look to re-cooperate from the loss Saturday, October 15th as it travels to take on conference foe Stevens Institute at 2:00 p.m. in Hoboken, NJ.
