Pine Valley, NY – The Elmira College Field Hockey team took the field today looking to pick up another win on the season as it faced non-conference opponent Wells College. The Soaring Eagles and Express both fought hard in the cold and snowy weather making it tough for anyone to win the game.
The game was a back and forth battle in the beginning, but Elmira got the better hand scoring in the 25th minute. Ashland Hall '15 (Belfast, ME -- Belfast Area) started the strike by taking the ball near the end line and passing it up to Ashley Leja '12 (Auburn, NY -- Dana L. West) who would fake the shot and pass it teammate Lauren Kirkland '14 (Alexandria, VA -- Hayfield) for the score on goal. At halftime this score would stand at 1-0 with both teams looking to fight again in the second half.
In the second half, the Express would fight back scoring in the 43rd minute with Shelby Moszkowicz taking the initial shot, but Lauren Thomas '14 (Marshfield, MA -- Marshfield) made the save by kicking the ball out. However, Elisabeth Rollo would gather the ball and shoot it past Thomas for the goal to tie it at one. This score would stand until the end where the game would get called a tie due to ground conditions.
The Soaring Eagles showed good offensive contributions from Kirkland, Hall, Leja, Sarah Thomassen '12 (Stewartstown, PA -- Kennard-Dale), Shannon Nelligan '14 (Poughquag, NY -- Canterbury), Sarah Harden-Marshall '14 (Marathon, NY -- Marathon), Sarah Watts '15 (Burlington, CT -- Lewis S. Mills) and Gina Maffei '13 (Wayne, NJ -- Morristown-Beard).
This brings Elmira College's overall record to 2-12-1 and 2-4 in the Empire 8. The Soaring Eagles will look to win their last regular season game on Saturday, October 29th when they travel to take on conference foe Ithaca College.
