Northfield, VT -- The Elmira College Women's Hockey team found its offensive firepower as it downed conference foe Manhattanville 7-3 in the consolation game of the East-West Classic, hosted by Norwich University. The win improves the Soaring Eagles to 1-1, while the loss drops the Valiants to 0-2.
The two teams played to an even 2-2 first period exchanging goals and feeling out the opponent's game. EC struck first at the 6:45 mark when
Alex Bresler '12 (Golden, CO -- Colorado Select) scored off a feed from
Ashley Ryan'15 (North Chili, NY -- Rochester Edge) and
Brooke Wilgosh '15 (Regina, SK -- Notre Dame Hounds). Manhattanville answered back less than two minutes later off a goal from Jessica Kehoe. The Purple and Gold responded once again just over halfway through the period when
Tori Charron '14 (Goodwood, ONT -- Aurora Panthers) lit the lamp on a power play goal from
Lindsay Mitchell '12 (Arnold, MD -- North American Hockey Academy). The Valiants would answer with an even-strength goal two minutes later.
In the second period Elmira outscored its opponents 2-1 and continued to establish momentum. Less than two minutes in Wilgosh knocked home a power play marker off a dish from Ryan. Exactly one minute later Manhattanville answered the call with a power play goal of its own. The Soaring Eagles continued to pour on the offensive attacked in the eight minute of the second period when Ryan added a score to her two assists, beating Valiant goaltender Mary Evans.
Tanis Lamoureux '14 (Canton, MI -- Victory Honda) tallied an assist on the score.
In the third stanza the Purple and Gold broke the game open, notching two goals within a nine second span. Lamoureux found the back of the net off a feed from
Maddy Charbonneau '14 (Greeley, CO -- Colorado Select), and Bresler scored off assists from Lamoureux and
Ella Stewart '14 (Mississauga, ONT -- Notre Dame Hounds). Bresler would add another goal on an empty netter with 14 seconds left for the final score of 7-3.
Elmira outshot the Valiants 37-18 overall in the contest, and four of EC's seven goals came on the power play.
Lauren Sullivan '13 (Toronto, ONT -- Markham-Stouffville Stars) stopped 15 shots in between the pipes for the Soaring Eagles, while Evans made 30 saves for Manhattanville. EC returns to action Nov. 12th when they visit SUNY Cortland at 7:00 p.m.
