Pine Valley, NY – The Elmira College Men's Hockey team scored early and put away the Knights of Neumann University Saturday night in Pine Valley. The win improves the Soaring Eagles to 3-2-0 overall and 3-0-0 in ECAC West play; while the loss drops the Knights to 2-1-0 overall and 1-1-0 in conference play.
The Soaring Eagles started off well scoring 7:27 minutes into the game with
Rick Acorn '12 (Barrie, ONT -- Couchiching Terriers) assisting
Wes Consorti '12 (Brantford, ONT --Niagara University) on a power play goal. Less than one minute later
Josh Burnell '15 (Mississauga, ONT -- Georgetown Raiders) recorded his first point in his Elmira career by assisting
Jesper Strale '14 (Uppsala, Sweden -- Springfield Pic's) for his third goal of the season.
In the second period the game would go back and forth with not many opportunities to score. Neumann would make up ground on Elmira with Dan McDougall and Mike Rey assisting Aaron Keaney on a goal at 15:40. The Soaring Eagles would respond with a little over two minutes left in the second period when
Strale scored his second goal of the game being assisted by
Burnell and
Joe Gagne '14 (Orrington, ME -- Cushing Academy).
In the third period Elmira would seal the game by
D'Arcy Oakes '13 (Shanty Bay, ONT -- Quinnipiac University) scoring off an assist from
Acorn and
Gagne. Neumann would try to fight back scoring in the 14th minute with Jordan Zalba being assisted by William Lacasse and Mike Rey. However,
Darren MacDonald '13 (Stittsville, ONT -- Nepean Raiders) and the Soaring Eagles defense would hold up strong stopping the Knights from completing a comeback.
MacDonald made 19 stops for Elmira, while Ross MacKinnon made 27 stops for Neumann. The Purple and Gold return to the ice next Friday, November 18, against conference opponent Hobart College at the Murray Athletics Center.
