Plattsburg, NY – The EC Women's Hockey Team fought off the number 7 nationally ranked Amherst College Lord Jeffersons in a 3-1 thriller to win the 2011 Cardinal-Panther Classic Tournament at the Stafford Ice Arena. The Soaring Eagles improve to 6-1-1 on the season while the Lord Jeffs fall to 3-1-0 on the season.
The Soaring Eagles started off the game well going shot for shot with the Lord Jeffs. However, the Lord Jeffs would score first in the 14:38 minute mark with Geneva Llyod scoring on a power play being assisted by Ashley Salerno. EC would respond in the 18:16 mark with
Tori Charron '14 (Goodwood, ONT -- Aurora Panthers) scoring a power play goal and her sixth goal of the season bringing the game to 1-1 at the end of the first period.
In the second period, EC came out strong scoring a goal within the first 30 seconds of play.
Alex Bresler '12 (Golden, CO -- Colorado Select) fed it up to
Ashley Ryan '15 (North Chili, NY -- Rochester Edge) who would shoot it in the top right corner passing the Amherst goalie Kerri Stuart for her fourth goal of the season and the game winning goal. The Soaring Eagles defense would stay strong for the rest of the half with goalie
Lauren Sullivan '13 (Toronto, ONT -- Markham-Stouffville) making some magnificent saves and stopping all 10 of the Lord Jeff's shots on goal.
In the third period, both teams continued to fight hard without giving any opportunities to score. The score would remain 2-1 for over 19 minutes of play in the period, but EC would fight off Amherst with
Tanis Lamoureux '14 (Canton, MI -- Victory Honda) securing the game at 19:31 on an empty net goal and scoring her fifth goal of the season. Sullivan finished the game with 26 saves and was named the Tournament Most Valuable Player, while Stuart finished with 22 saves.
The Soaring Eagles will travel to Potsdam, NY to take on the Bears of SUNY Potsdam Saturday, December 3rd.
